Simil's primary focus in this first session was a look at Col 3:1-4, kind of as a "launch point" if you will among a new group of folks.
He focused on the first word of 3:1, the conjunction translated "if" - 1487/ei - and its correlation with its respective verb in the aorist indicative, ("you were raised with"), along with the differentiation of this form of "if" from that "if" - 1437/ean - that is related to a verb in the "subjunctive" mood,
The first focuses us on a conditional but assumed factual (here: past) event, where the 2nd draws our focus forward to the possibilities [...].
Simil's thrust here is that it is very important to keep an eye on our conjunctions (and prepositions), as they provide so much meaning to the motion and flow of scripture, backward vs. forward, factual vs. potential, etc.
Some translations at Col. 3:1, for example, handle this word as "since"... rather than "if"... "If" coupled with the indicative [in this context], however, asks us to "consider that IF INDEED IT IS SO [...]" that you were "raised together with Christ," then these things [...] should follow. (these are my words based on my current level if understanding... you'd probably do better looking at Strongs 1487 in the [DB Software] of course..!!)
We also looked at the strength of that verb 4891 συνεγείρω, sýnegeiró, "raised up (together) with" and the impact of the addition of the "4862/sýn" (συν) in front to the root word egeiró, strengthening the intensity of the action to be a very tight "togetherness" bond [see Strongs 4862 in the DB software].
